A city disfigured by war, exhausted, destitute, but unconquered. Destroyed fates, broken hearts, tired of sirens, tired of daily pain, senseless death walks along the streets as a shadow next to life, which is already becoming commonplace in the stream of endless obituaries.
I don't want to tell you about the war, because I was in the very middle of it myself. Instead, I want to share a story about a small island of hope - the children's art studio ‘Aza Nizi Maza’, which is hidden in the heart of Kharkiv, in one of the city's bomb shelters. Even during the bombing, the young artists continue to paint, turning dark dungeons into a space of light and creativity. For children, it's more than just painting - it's an escape from reality, a place where they can be themselves, away from fears and explosions.
The ten-year war has entered its second decade, and what seemed temporary is now an integral part of life. Those who planned to escape have already fled, and those who stayed behind have learned to rejoice at the dawn, because they are tired of hiding from the war, they just dream of regaining their lost lives and peace in the morning.
We called our film Underground Garden. This title came about when I first went down into the dungeons of the studio and felt the war receding, and in its place appeared children's laughter and voices full of hope. This is a real garden where little creators grow up, and their imagination and talent blossom along with them. You can't help but be happy when you see their works, full of colour and life-giving power that breaks through the grey of war.
